All
manufacturing industries are moving to a global production base through a
combination of contract and internal manufacturing. Supply chain optimization for distributed
manufacturing requires a combination of single-piece-flow Lean manufacturing
with manufacturing operations management (MOM) systems to enable the
distributed pull supply chains. Contrary
to how Lean was applied to 20th Century Make-to-Stock supply chains, 21st
century "pull" distributed supply chains are for global make-to-order
(MTO) markets. Global MTO markets require real-time visibility of all forms of
production capabilities and state of their resources to determine the most cost
effective method for near 100% on-time-delivery. The resulting Supply chain
management systems must be based on manufacturing integration standards to
establish the foundation for "standard work" methods to enable a
successful transformation to Lean manufacturing. This is an overview of the
concept of Lean Production Management that explains this relationship between
IT systems and Lean management methods.
